Match Report

Al Ittihad pulled off an unlikely away win, holding on for a 1-0 victory at Al Qadsiah despite playing more than half the match with ten men. It capped a wild opening month for both clubs and gave Jens Wissing's side a much-needed lift after a stumbling start to the campaign. The only goal came right at the end of the first half, George Ilenikhena finishing off a Steven Bergwijn assist in the 45+1st minute. The game then turned two minutes into the second half when Dion Lopy, only making his fourth appearance since arriving from Almeria, was shown a second yellow for a rash challenge on Otavio and sent off, leaving Al Ittihad to defend their slender lead a man down for the rest of the contest. The result snaps Al Qadsiah's bright early-season form under Brendan Rodgers, while Al Ittihad move off the bottom of the table after their opening-day draw, a gritty response that will please Wissing heading into the next round of fixtures.
