Atenas built a two-goal cushion before halftime against Peñarol at the Domingo Burgueño Miguel, but the visitors clawed back for a 2-2 draw in Group A of the Copa Uruguay. Peñarol nearly stole all three points in stoppage time, only to miss from the penalty spot.
Brian Barboza turned into his own net in the 12th minute to open the scoring, and Thiago Rucci made it 2-0 from the spot in the 28th. Peñarol hit back straight after the break when Agustín Acosta also put through his own goal in the 46th, and Leandro Umpiérrez leveled it at 2-2 in the 63rd. Atenas finished the match with ten men after a red card, then survived Eric Remedi's missed penalty deep into stoppage time.
The point keeps Peñarol atop Group A with four points from two games, while Atenas remains fourth on one point after a draw and a loss, still searching for their first win in the group phase.
