Match Report
Westerlo pulled off a surprise 4-2 win over Standard Liège at Het Kuipje, defying pre-match predictions that had tipped the visitors for an away victory. It was exactly the kind of result Westerlo, struggling near the foot of the table, needed to lift some pressure heading into the international break.
Norman Bassette opened the scoring in the 12th minute, and Amando Lapage doubled the lead early in the second half (56'). Standard Liège hit back through Bruny Nsimba (66') and Adnane Abid (71') to level the tension, but Pape Daouda Diong restored Westerlo's advantage in the 77th minute before Thomas Van Den Keybus wrapped things up deep into stoppage time (90+2').
Despite seeing less of the ball, Westerlo made their chances count clinically. For Standard Liège, sitting comfortably in playoff contention, the defeat is a costly stumble, while for Westerlo it's a rare and much-needed three points to build on.
